For many reasons, Doina Staiculescu is representing an unique case in the history of Romanian sport.
She gained the first Olympic medal for rhythmic gymnastics in 1984 and she is the world's first Olympic vice-champion at rhythmic gymnastics.
Situated on the 6th place at Strasbourg 1983 World Championship, Doina Staiculescu was the biggest favorites from the American continent.
She began practicing rhythmic gymnastics at "Flacăra Roșie" Sports Association and was a national champion for three times. Both rhythmic gymnastics club from this Association and at the national team of Romania she was trained by Maria Garba.
For her exceptional merits, Doina Staiculescu gained the title of " Honored Master of Sports" . In 2000, she also gained the National Medal "For Merit", 2nd class, offered by the Romanian president (at that time) Emil Constantinescu and, in 2004 she was offered by the Romanian president Ion Iliescu, The Great Order and Grade " Sportive Merit"
Doina Staiculescu is still closed to the discipline that consecrated her, being in the present coach at a private school.
